Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish استعاره (istiʿāre, “an asking for a loan, for the temporary use of a thing, a using (a word) tropically, metaphorically, a trope, metaphor”),[1] from Arabic اِسْتِعَارَة (istiʕāra, “metaphor”), verbal noun of اِسْتَعَارَ (istaʕāra).[2]
