From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *m/s/g-ljak (to lick; tongue). Cognate with Burmese လျက် (lyak, lick), Tibetan ལྡག་པ (ldag pa, lick), Old Chinese (OC *ɦljeʔ), Nuosu (yot, lick). Compare with Lhao Vo yo, , Zaiwa yoq and Hpon zòʔ. Etymologically related to ʃa⁵⁵ (tongue).
