From Middle French jars, gars, from Old French jars, garz, gart, from Frankish *gaʀd (spike, stick, sting) (in reference to the male's penis), from Proto-Germanic *gazdaz (rod, staff). Cognate with Old High German gart (sting, goad, spur, gad), Old English ġeard (rod, spike). Compare also Gaulish *garanos (crane), from Proto-Celtic *garanos.
