From Malay jendela, from Portuguese janela, from Vulgar Latin *januella, diminutive of Latin jānua, alternative spelling of iānua (door, double-doored entrance), from Iānus (Janus, Roman god of gates and doorways), perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ey- (to go).
