Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Old East Slavic естьство (estĭstvo), from Old Church Slavonic естьство, ѥстьство (estĭstvo, jestĭstvo), itself a calque of Ancient Greek οὐσία (ousía), from the feminine present participle of εἰμί (eimí, I am). By surface analysis, jest +‎ -stwo.
