[edit]From Proto-Polynesian *kaa-pui (compare with Hawaiian ʻāhui (“bunch (of fruit like bananas)”))[1] from Proto-Polynesian from Proto-Oceanic *pui₁ (“bunch of fruit”) (compare with Hawaiian hui (“troupe, association, society, club”) and Tahitian hui (“group”) plus Hawaiian huihui (“cluster, collection, bunch”) and Tahitian huihui (“collection”)).[2] Doublet of hui and huihui.
