Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *kakci toicta kümmentä. Equivalent to kaks (two) +‎ teist (of second). Shortened from kaksteistkümmend ("two of the second decade"), which is still evident in declension. Cognate with Finnish kaksitoista.
