Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from Ancient Greek καλλιγραφία (kalligraphía, pretty writing), from κάλλος (kállos, beauty) and γράφω (gráphō, to draw), adapted to Latvian lexical patterns ( +‎ -ija).
