From Arabic قَنْدِيل (qandīl), from Classical Syriac ܩܢܕܠܐ (qandēlā), from Ancient Greek κάνδηλα (kándēla), from Latin candēla (a candle), from candeō (I am white, bright, shining), from Proto-Indo-European *kand- (to shine, glow).

Compare with English candle or more so Spanish & Portuguese, candil & candil respectively.
