From Arabic قَنْدِيل(qandīl), from Classical Syriac ܩܢܕܠܐ(qandēlā), from Ancient Greek κάνδηλα(kándēla), from Latin candēla(a candle), from candeō(I am white, bright, shining), from Proto-Indo-European *kand-(to shine, glow).

Compare with English candle or more so Spanish & Portuguese, candil & candil respectively.
