Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Sanskrit कषाय (kaṣāya, astringent; dull; yellowish red; dirt; passion), from Proto-Indo-European *kars-. Cognates include Sanskrit कष्ट (kaṣṭa) and English harsh.

kashaya (uncountable)

  1. (Buddhism) Robes of fully ordained monks and nuns
  2. (Jainism) Passion; strong feelings produced by a person's soul out of worldly attachments.
