Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kā́ˀupas m, from Proto-Indo-European *kéh₂wp-os, from *keh₂wp- (heap, pile). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *kùpъ (heap, mound), Proto-Germanic *haupaz (heap).[1]
