- From Malay kayangan, from Javanese kayangan (ꦏꦪꦔꦤ꧀, “paradise, heaven”), from Old Javanese kahyaṅan (“abode of the gods, temple, sacred place, hermitage”). Equivalent to ke- + hyang + -an.
- Semantic loan from Balinese kayangan (ᬓᬬᬗᬦ᭄, “temple”), cf. above.
