From Middle Breton comps, from Proto-Celtic *kom-wep-s-, derivative of *wepos (speech, voice) (whence Welsh gwep (face)), from Proto-Indo-European *wekʷ- (to speak). Compare Ancient Greek ἔπος (épos), Latin vox.
