From a derivative of Proto-Slavic *kukъ (“cuckoo”), of imitative origin. Cognate with Upper Sorbian kokula, Polish kukułka, Czech kukačka, Serbo-Croatian kȕkavica, and Russian куку́шка (kukúška).
