From kunst- (artificial) +‎ maan (moon). First used in 1958.[1] Compare similarly formed words Hungarian műhold (1958) and Icelandic gervitungl (1955).

      In a coffee corner at the KNMI we gaze at measurements from climate satellite Ceres, an artificial satellite which carefully keeps track of how much solar radiation enters the top of the atmosphere and how much heat radiation the earth reflects back into space.
