Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Baltic *led-, from Proto-Indo-European *ledʰ(ice), perhaps the same as *leidʰ(slippery, to slide). Cognates include Lithuanian lẽdas, dialectal ledùs, Old Prussian ladis, Russian лёд(ljod), Old Church Slavonic лєдъ(ledŭ), Czech led, Polish lód.[1]
