From Middle Welsh llaw (“small”), from Proto-Celtic *legu-, *lagu- (“small”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lengʷʰ- (“lightweight”). Cognate with Old Irish laigiu.

Possibly ultimately from From Proto-Indo-European *pelH- (“pale”) and so connected to llwyd (“grey”).
