Inherited from Middle English *langschip, from Old English langsċip (a longship, a large warship), equivalent to long +‎ ship. Cognate with German Langschiff, German Low German Langschipp, Icelandic langskip, Norwegian Bokmål langskip, Norwegian Nynorsk langskip, Dutch langschip.
