13th century. From Gothic 𐌻𐍉𐍆𐌰 (lōfa, palm of the hand), from Proto-Germanic *lōfô (palm of the hand).[1] Alternatively, from Suevic [Term?] *glufa,[2] from Proto-Germanic *galōfô (compare dialectal Spanish goluba).
