Etymology

Compound of mā- (combinatory form of -mēy (hand)) +‎ kwi (to take) + suffix -l (passive nominalization). Compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Classical Nahuatl mācuīlli (five). From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Nahuan *ma:kwil, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Uto-Aztecan *manniki. Probably cognate with Yaqui mamni (five) and Shoshone manegite (five).
