First attested in 1888. Formed as mal- (“wrong”, “improper(ly)”: ultimately from the Classical (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin male, “badly”, “wrongly”; from malus, “bad”; compare the ben- element in benocclusion) + occlusion (“alignment of the teeth in closed jaws”).
