From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Anglo-Norman maumeterie, a reduced form of mahumetterie (idolatry, heathendom), from Mahumet (Muhammad), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old French Mahomet, ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (see Muhammad for more). Equivalent to mammet +‎ -ry.
