From older mbëledh, from Old Albanian ënbëljedh, from Proto-Albanian *ambiledza, compound of *ambi (on, over) (modern mbi) + *ledza, from Proto-Indo-European *leǵ- (to gather) (compare English leech (doctor), Latin legere, Ancient Greek λέγω (légō)).
