[edit]Pseudo-loan from Ancient Greek as if formed from a compound of μεγάλος (megálos, “big”) + ὀδών (odṓn, “tooth”); coined by Swiss-born American scientist Louis Agassiz in 1843 as a specific epithet. By surface analysis, megalo- + -odon.
