The noun derives from the post-Classical (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin monogrammum, itself from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Byzantine Greek μονόγραμμον (monógrammon); compare the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] French and (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle French monogramme, as well as the Italian monogramma. The verb derives from the noun; compare the earlier adjective monogrammed and the slightly earlier noun monogramming.
