From Old Frisian mōna, from Proto-Germanic *mēnô (moon), from Proto-Indo-European *mḗh₁n̥s.; closest cognates are Föhr-Amrum North Frisian muun, West Frisian moanne and English moon. Compare also Dutch maan, German Mond, Danish måne.
