mulraiyat (plural mulraiyats)

  1. The headman of an agricultural village in South Asia.
    • 1905, “DarBari Panjiara v. Beni Rai”, in The Calcutta Law Journal, volume 2, page 79:
      Next, as to the position of the plaintiff; he was originally a mulraiyat; he was entitled voluntarily to give up his special right of alienation; this he did in 1896 , and accepted settlement as a mustagir.
    • 1912, The Sonthal Parganas Manual, 1911, page 257:
      The proprietor has the right to settle basauri tenants on the unappropriated waste land of the village, but the mulraiyat or raiyats, if aggrieved by the action of the proprietor in settling a basauri tenant, may object before the subdivisional officer, who, after due enquiry, may set asside or modify such settlement.
