[edit]From Proto-Vietic *t-ɓaŋ, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁ɓaŋ. Cognate with Muong băng, Thavung บัง, Pacoh abáng, Khmer ទំពាំង (tumpĕəng), Bahnar tơ'băng, Mang ɓaŋ⁶, Mon တ္ၜၚ် (bɛŋ).
Proto-Karen *Ɂbaŋᴮ (whence S'gaw Karen ဘီၣ် (baẁ)) is an Austroasiatic loanword.
