From Old Galician-Portuguese nin (h)ũu, earlier nen (h)ũu, from Latin nec ūnus (“not even one”). Displaced collateral form ningũu. Compare Galician ningún, Spanish ninguno, Catalan ningú and dialectal French dégun.
