neural crest (plural neural crests)

  1. (embryology) A strip of ectodermal material in the early vertebrate embryo inserted between the prospective neural plate and the epidermis.

      All of these features are under the control of a particular set of cells in the embryo called the neural crest, from which a particular part of the brain, the amygdala, derives.
