Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *kār(i)da, from Proto-Indo-European *kēr dʰeh₁- (“to take root, to stiffen”).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (“to yearn for”). Compare Old Norse grāðr (“greed, lust, hunger”), Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌴𐌳𐌿𐍃 (grēdus, “hunger”), Old Irish grád (“love”), Latin grātum. Original meaning 'to starve, die of hunger'.
