From Proto-Albanian *kār(i)da, from Proto-Indo-European *kēr dʰeh₁- (to take root, to stiffen).[1] Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰer- (to yearn for). Compare Old Norse grāðr (greed, lust, hunger), Gothic 𐌲𐍂𐌴𐌳𐌿𐍃 (grēdus, hunger), Old Irish grád (love), Latin grātum. Original meaning 'to starve, die of hunger'.
