From on- +‎ cost, or from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle English uncost (additional expense), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch oncost (expenses, overhead) (Modern Dutch onkost), equivalent to un- +‎ cost. Cognate with German Unkost (expenses).
