Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Dutch onderhavich, by-form of onderhevich (modern onderhevig); this form with -a- had become obsolete in early modern Dutch. In its current meaning the word was revived sometime in the nineteenth century and derived, by semantic loan, from the past participle of German unterhaben. Doublet of onderhevig.
