Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Tocharian *ānelme, abstract form of *ān- (to breathe), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₁- (to breathe), the same source as anāsk- (to breathe), āñme (self, soul), and añiye (breath). Cognate with Latin animus (spirit) (whence English animal), German Atmen (breath), etc. Also possibly from *h₂en-h₂enh₁mo- (one whose breath is upon them), a form of the above root.
