Etymology
From oor (“ear”) + vijg (“fig”); it is unclear whether oorvaag etc. developed independently, from oor + the root of vegen/vagen 'to wipe', or are popular etymology from the older oorvijg, which has Germanic cognates, including German Ohrfeige, and similar vegetal-manual semantics such as vuistlook (“fist garlic”).
