The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca)., from Vulgar Latin *ovicla, from Latin ovicula, diminutive of ovis (“sheep”), from Proto-Italic *owis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ówis. Compare Occitan oelha, Spanish oveja, Portuguese ovelha, French ouaille.
