Etymology 1
[edit]Inherited from Sanskrit पत्ति (patti, “the act of going, moving, walking”). The Pali Text Society's derivation of this sense from Sanskrit प्राप्ति (prāpti, “attainment”), while semantically appealing, appears phonetically tenuous and seemingly contradicts the derivation of paṭipatti, from the same dictionary, as paṭi- + pad, though it is possible that the latter term influenced the semantic development of the term in Pali.
