Etymology

Equivalent to pekel (brine) or pekelen (to brine) +‎ zonde (sin). The first part of the compound is a folk-etymological interpretation of Latin peccatillum (minor sin), the diminutive of Latin peccatum (sin, error, fault), from Latin peccō (I sin, offend), from Proto-Indo-European verbal root *ped- (to walk, fall, stumble).
