Etymology

From Middle English popedome, papdome, from Old English pāpdōm, equivalent to pope +‎ -dom. Cognate with Dutch pausdom (popedom), German Papsttum (papacy; popedom), Old Norse páfadómr (popedom; papacy), Swedish påvedöme (papacy).
