From Proto-Slavic *pъtica, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *peth₂- (to fly). Cognate with English feather, pen, Ancient Greek πέτομαι (pétomai), πτέρυξ (ptérux) (whence pterodactyl, archæopteryx, Greek φτερό (fteró), πτηνό (ptinó)), Latin petō.
