From Proto-Polynesian *puaka.

For generic sense as quadruped, compare with Tahitian puaʻa in puaʻahorofenua “horse” (corresponding to puaʻa holo honua; holo itself basis for holoholona “animal”) and puaʻatoro “cow, bull” lit. 'astretch pig'
