Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From qalb +‎ -ieni, from Arabic قَلْب (qalb), perhaps after the expression قَوِيُّ القَلْبِ (qawiyyu l-qalbi, courageous, literally strong of heart).

The same notion exists in many languages, compare German beherzt, English take heart, etc. Compare also the etymology of courage.

Pronunciation[edit]
