Borrowed from French quadrupède, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle French, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin stem of quadrupēs (“four-footed, a four-footed animal”), from quadri- (“four-”) + stem of pes (“foot”). Alternatively analyzable as quadru- + -ped.
