From Old Galician-Portuguese queimar, from a Vulgar Latin *caimāre (possibly influenced by Greek), from Latin cremāre, present active infinitive of cremō, from Proto-Indo-European *ker (“to burn”). Compare Portuguese queimar, Asturian and Spanish quemar, also Catalan cremar.
