Alternative forms[edit]
- (North Central Vietnam) tát
Etymology[edit]
Often theorized as being from Old Chinese 烈 (OC *[r]at) (B-S) (SV: liệt). However, the form tɑt⁷ recorded in the Vietic lect of Cao Lao Hạ[1] and tát in the Lộc Hà lect of Hà Tĩnh[2] point to an older form with the initial cluster *C-s instead of *r, therefore rendering the theory aforementioned unlikely. Compare pairs such as North Central tắn vs. written standard rắn, North Central tít vs. written standard rết.
