French

Etymology

re- +‎ devoir

Pronunciation

Verb

redevoir

  1. to owe again
Vous me redevez cinq euros - you owe me five euros again
  2. (rare or obsolete) to have to again

Usage notes

  • It's more usual in contemporary French to use devoir with re- in front of the verb, or use à nouveau or de nouveau.
  • The nonstandard past participle redû is sometimes found, formed by analogy with the past participle of devoir (whose circumflex is present solely to distinguish the word from du).
