Probably from a Vulgar Latin *ronea or *aronea, from Latin arānea (“spiderweb”) (with probable influence from another word, such as rōbīgō (“rust”), rubea (“reddish”), or rōdō (“gnaw”)); cf. araña. Less likely linked to Latin aerūgō, aerūginem (“rust”).
