Probably from a Vulgar Latin *ronea or *aronea, from Latin arānea (spiderweb) (with probable influence from another word, such as rōbīgō (rust), rubea (reddish), or rōdō (gnaw)); cf. araña. Less likely linked to Latin aerūgō, aerūginem (rust).
