- (historical, military) In the forced conscription system (often translated as "allotment system" into English, see Wikipedia article linked above) valid in Finland from 1682 to 1901, a group of estates responsible for providing an armed soldier for the crown.
- (historical, military) Smallest operative grouping in the armed forces of Sweden consisting of 12 to 20 men, corresponding roughly to the platoon of modern armies.
- (idiomatic) order, discipline (in certain idioms)
- laittaa ruotuun ― to discipline, impose order on someone
- poiketa ruodusta ― to step aside, deviate from the right or proper path, especially from an ideological point of view
- pysyä ruodussa ― to toe the line, fall in line
