Borrowed from Latin sēsamum, from Ancient Greek σήσαμον (sḗsamon), from Old Aramaic שושמא (šūššmā), shortening of שומשומא (šumššumā), from Akkadian 𒃻𒈦𒌑𒈬 (/šamaššammū/), 𒊭𒈦𒌑𒈨 (/šamaššammi/, literally “oil plant”). See English sesame for more information.
