From Ottoman Turkish سویلمك (söylemek), from Old Anatolian Turkish [script needed] (söylemek, to speak), attested at 1317. Further etymology unclear, often regarded as corruption of Common Turkic *sözle- < *söz. However this might be folk etymology. See söz and sözle-.
